Coming on holiday to Fuerteventura - "What sort of weather should you expect in Fuerteventura?"

Fuerteventura has a very MILD, DRY, sunny climate and is on the same latitude as Florida and Mexico, and enjoys over 3000 hours of sunshine a year.   It DOES rain - but for just a handful of days a year, and usually at night!

LeisureZone TipWait until 12:30 to gauge the rest of the day's weather. Sometimes (particularly in the winter months) the day starts cloudy and grey, but it normally clears by lunchtime.

LOVE THE SUN, but hate the blistering heat of summer?

The following chart will help you decide which is the best time for you to visit. Please remember to use plenty of sunscreen year-round, it is not the temperature that burns, but the strength of the suns rays. The breeze can be deceptive and you WILL burn, even on cloudy days!

WORRIED ABOUT THE WIND ?

Fuerteventura IS a windy island, with the World Windsurfing Slalom event takes place every year on the Sotovento beaches in Costa Calma. The wind is present year-round and is very welcoming, particularly in the hot summer months as it helps to keep you cooler than in mainland spain. The wind usually dies down a bit in September/October which can be a lovely time of year to visit. Autumn/Winter winds can be quite chilly in the evenings, so please remember to take a light cardigan or jacket.

Occasionally extra-warm winds blow from the Sahara desert, taking with them lots of sand particles and raising temperatures up to the mid to high 40's. This is known locally as a "Calima" which usually takes place during the summer months and can last for 2-3 days at a time. Temperatures then return to normal.

If you are really worried about the wind and want to use the beaches, you could get yourself a beach tent or use one of the manmade wind shelter "dens" (lava rock circular shelters, locally known as "hoyos").

CAN YOU SWIM IN THE SEA ALL YEAR ?

YES. The snorkelling and diving excursions operate ALL YEAR. Sea Temperatures are obviously cooler in the winter, but are not completely prohibitive. Sea temperatures are warmer than unheated hotel pools in the winter!
