ISLA DE LOBOS

Isla de Lobos

The small islet of Lobos is situated just 2km from Corralejo and measures 4.4-sq-km with a coastline of 13.7km.    It was originally inhabited by monk seals (lobos marinos/lobos del mar - sea wolves)  hence the origin of its name.  Over-hunting resulted in the complete annihilation of the species in the area, although there is talk of the reintroduction of the animals.

Lobos is a Protected Nature Zone (Parque Natural Islote de Lobos) and  is home to several bird species including the Great Grey Shrike, Tern, Blue Heron, Egret and Curlew.  The island also supports rabbits, Lizards and Geckos, with Hammerhead sharks and several species of fish and rays inhabiting the crystal clear turquoise waters. There are
over 130 species of vegetation, some unique to the island.

The highest point on the island is the peak Montaña La Caldera (Cauldron Mountain) at 127m.    To the north west of the island is El Faro (Lighthouse). Playa de la Concha is a sweeping sandy bay with turquoise waters and the ideal place to spend your day. It can be viewed from the ferry as you sail towards the pier to dock.

The small Puertito in the south of the island continues to operate in the ways of a lifestyle of bygone days, with the rustic and rural housing of the few locals adding colour and character to the  area.

There is a small area available for camping - NO FACILITIES!

Looking from Lobos back towards Fuerteventura, the colourful sails of the kite and windsurfers on the shores of Fuerteventura, flap like butterflies, adding to the unique feeling of peace and tranquility, soothing and calming the senses.  Enjoy and discover the Isla de Lobos!

Lobos can be reached by any of the regular ferries from Corralejo harbour, with return trips costing 16 euros per person. Journey time is around 15 minutes across the Bocayna Strait with its reefs and crystal clear waters. There are also several pleasure cruises which anchor close to the island for snorkelling and other water activities.

Please RESPECT THE ISLAND and keep to the footpaths.

Take SUNSHADING and plenty of liquid or WATER with you as there are NO SERVICES AVAILABLE.
